Abstract. This chapter introduces the physical principles underlying hyperpolarized (HP) gas magnetic resonance. The properties of such HP gases, including spin I≥1/2 noble gas isotopes and low molecular-mass gases like propane, are introduced in the context of biomedical particular interest are mechanisms of relaxation and contrast, and the ramifications of using HP gases in.
